Wortelsticks - Sormac

The demand for healthy food is continuously increasing worldwide. In retail, foodservice, hospitality and large-scale kitchens, this leads to a constant need for efficiently and reliably processed carrot products. Sormac offers technology that perfectly meet these needs, for example for:

  • Semi-finished products: clean, peeled and/or cut carrots
  • Ready-to-cook applications: slices, cubes, crinkle cut and grated carrots, for stir-fry mixes and mise-en-place packs
  • Ready-to-eat applications: baby carrots, snack carrots, carrot sticks, and julienne-cut or grated carrots for salad mixes

To preserve the natural color, texture, and freshness of carrots during processing, reliable and efficient equipment is essential. Our technology supports this with features specifically designed to deliver:

  • High yield
  • Excellent peeling quality
  • Consistent end product quality with optimal freshness
  • A reliable workflow
  • High standards of hygiene and food safety

Peeling

Our carrot peeling machines

Peeling is a crucial step in carrot processing, as it directly affects both the final product quality and yield.

Sormac offers two peeling techniques: knife peeling and abrasive peeling with carborundum. The method used depends on the application. Carborundum peeling is often used for baby carrots, while knife peeling is preferred for carrots where a smooth and uniform appearance is important.

  • Consistent peeling without flat surface

Our carrot peeling machines are designed to deliver an even peel with minimal risk of flat peeling, resulting in higher yield per kilo and a consistently smooth finish. Our specialists will gladly advise you on the optimal settings for your production, so each carrot is processed in the best possible way.”

Knife peelers

Preserving the carrot’s cellular structure during peeling is essential for an attractive appearance and longer shelf life. Our knife peelers peel the product in a single motion, using multiple knife stations with precisely positioned blades that follow the natural contours of each carrot. This minimizes waste and delivers a premium, hand-peeled quality finish.

  • Knife peelers UP-range are available in three versions and can be used as stand-alone machines or integrated into a line. They are suitable for carrots with diameters between 20–65 mm.
  • Knife peeler KWS is specifically designed for smaller carrots, such as bunched or spring carrots, with diameters from 8–45 mm.

Carborundum peelers

Carborundum peelers, also known as abrasive peelers, remove the peel using an abrasive grain. Coarse grains are used for rough peeling, finer grains for smoothing the surface, and very fine grains can even be used for polishing. These techniques are often used in sequence and are ideal for baby carrots.

  • Revolver peeler CRR is suitable for in-line abrasive peeling of smaller products with diameters from 5 to 45 mm.
  • Roller peeler CRP is ideal for peeling carrots with diameters between 30 and 200 mm.
  • Peeling machine CBS can be used as a stand-alone machine or as part of a processing line with a smaller capacity.

Cutting

Our carrot cutting machines

Sormac offers a wide range of carrot top and tail machines as well as carrot cutting machines that combine durability, high precision, and efficiency. Our range includes both fully automatic and semi-automatic machines, suitable for various capacities and cutting styles.

All of these solutions help customers optimize their carrot processing, reduce manual labor, achieve fast results, and expand their product offer.

Inline carrot cutting machines

  • Carrot topper and piece cutter WOS-1A combines topping and cutting carrots into pieces and can be fed manually or integrated in-line with a peeling machine.
  • Carrot cutter WSS is designed for industrial cutting of carrots to fixed sizes, for example in the production of small or baby carrots.
  • Automatic carrot topper WOA is ideal for high-volume processing. It separates and positions carrots in 3 or 4 lanes, then tops, tails, and optionally cuts them into pieces.

Versatile semi-automatic cutting machines

  • Belt cutter BSM-150 supports various cutting types, including slices, crinkle cut, julienne, and grated carrots.
  • Slice & wedge cutters FS-1500 and FS-3600 are ideal for cutting fresh carrots into slices, wedges and sticks.
  • Dicer DC-145 is perfect for cutting carrots into cubes, sticks, and slices.
  • Vegetable sticks machine GSM cuts carrots into sticks.
  • Carrot baton machine WSM cuts carrots lengthwise and crosswise into sticks.

Test before you invest!

We understand how important it is to experience a machine in practice before making a decision. You can visit one of our demo locations, join an online demonstration, or we can bring the machine to your site. If desired, we can test it with your own product so you can see for yourself how the machine performs.

Frequently Asked Questions about carrot processing

Knife peelers deliver a smooth, hand-peeled appearance. Carborundum peelers are suitable for abrasive peeling, usually, at higher capacity. The choice depends on the desired end product and the required capacity or throughput. Often, a combination of both technologies is chosen.

Sormac offers both standalone machines for small batches to fully integrated high-capacity lines. We work with you to identify the solution that matches your required volume, end product, and automation needs.

Flat peeling occurs when carrots are peeled for too long or too aggressively, resulting in flat surfaces and leading to unnecessary product loss. Our machines are designed to prevent flat peeling, and we are happy to advise you on the correct process settings, such as the choice of abrasive material, peeling time and the proper loading of the machine.
