Potato processing for maximum yield and consistent fresh quality

Sormac builds potato processing machines for fresh applications, including ready-to-cook products such as table potatoes, chilled fresh potatoes, and freshly cut fries. Every day, products processed with our machines make their way to supermarkets, the food service sector, and industrial kitchens worldwide.

Our knife peelers have become a proven standard among leading potato processors and are used to re-peel rejected steam-peeled potatoes for the chips and frozen French fries production.

Are you a potato grower or fresh processor? We are happy to support you with both standalone machines for peeling and cutting potatoes as well as complete processing lines, fully tailored to your production requirements. Our solutions are designed for:

  • Optimal processing with minimal product loss
  • Precise peeling and cutting of potatoes
  • Hygiene and food safety
  • Less manual labor in production

Peeling

Our potato peelers

Sormac offers two peeling techniques that help processors get the most out of their potatoes: knife peeling and carborundum peeling. Often, both techniques are combined to achieve the perfect balance between capacity, throughput, and the desired appearance of the final product.

  • Even Peeling Without “Flat Spots”

Our potato peelers consistently deliver an even result with minimal risk of flat peeling. Factors such as controlled product flow and the shape of the knife peeler drum contribute to this result. Our experts are happy to advise you on the ideal settings for your machines.

Carborundum peelers

Carborundum peelers, also known as abrasive peelers, feature rotating rolls in continuous peelers or drums in pot peelers, coated with a layer of carborundum grit. Controlled rotation and friction remove the peel evenly, ensuring a consistent result, high throughput, and minimal waste. By selecting and combining various grit sizes, Sormac allows processors to optimize the peeling process and reach the best possible product result.

Sormac offers different carborundum peelers, tailored to different applications and capacities:

  • Peeling machine CBS/MBS can be used as a standalone machine or as part of a line setup with smaller capacity.
  • Revolver peeler CRR suitable for in-line peeling of smaller products (e.g., baby potatoes 5–45 mm).
  • Roller peeler CRP ideal for peeling potatoes with diameters from 30 to 200 mm.

Knife peelers

  • Peeling machine CBS/MBS for small volumes up to 25 kg per batch (standalone solution). This machine can also be integrated into a processing line.
  • Knife peeler MS-range used exclusively in line setups, with a capacity of up to 2,650 kg per hour.

Cutting

Our potato cutting machines

Consistent cutting contributes to even cooking, frying, and baking, and results in a uniform final product in both size and shape. Quality in cutting also directly affects yield.

Sormac offers versatile potato cutting equipment, from standalone and semi-automatic machines with a wide range of options to fully integrated in-line systems.

In-line cutting equipment: precision meets consistency

  • Potato halving machine DMC part of Sormac’s in-line portfolio, the machine cuts potatoes into two halves and has a capacity of up to 72,000 potatoes per hour.
  • Segmenting machine DMA suitable for cutting potatoes into two, four, or eight pieces, offering additional flexibility. This machine has a capacity of up to 32,000 potatoes per hour.

Versatile potato cutting machines for maximum flexibility and precision

  • Slice and wedge cutters FS-1500 and FS-3600 ideal for cutting fresh potato slices, wedges, or fries.
  • Belt slicer BSM-150 supports multiple cut shapes, including potato slices, crinkle cuts, and grated potatoes.
  • Dicer DC-145 perfect for cutting potatoes into cubes, fries, and slices.

Test before you invest!

We know how important it is to experience the equipment before committing. You can visit one of our demo locations, receive an online demo, or we can even bring the equipment to your site. We can also test with your own produce, so you can see first-hand how it performs.

Frequently asked questions about potato processing

Knife peelers deliver a smooth, hand-peeled appearance. Carborundum peelers are suitable for abrasive peeling, usually, at higher capacity. The choice depends on the desired end product and the required capacity or throughput. Often, a combination of both technologies is chosen.

Sormac offers both standalone machines for small batches to fully integrated high-capacity lines. We work with you to identify the solution that matches your required volume, end product, and automation needs.

Flat peeling occurs when potatoes are peeled for too long or too aggressively, resulting in flat surfaces and unnecessary product loss. Our machines are designed to help prevent flat peeling, and we are happy to advise you on the correct process settings, such as grit selection, peeling time, and proper machine loading.

Yes. Depending on the situation, the controls and line set-up can be configured to include both Sormac machines and third-party equipment. Contact us to explore the possibilities.
